I’m a darts world champion but I have a side hustle running a cafe – I’m closing it and opening a fish and chip shop

DARTS superstar Gerwyn Price has revealed that he wants to open his own fish and chip shop.

The world No5 already owns a cafe in Markham, Caerphilly, but he now has his heart set on a new business venture.

Price revealed: “The café is not doing too good at the minute – sometimes business is a little bit up and down.

“So, the café is going to shut. I’m opening a fish-and-chip/kebab shop. Turn the café into a flat.

“It’s a small village, it’s all about footfall in the village. Some days it earns a bit. Some days it doesn’t. It’s a little bit slow.

“We will do deliveries. We didn’t do any from the café which may have probably helped.

“When I open the fish and chip shop, it will be the likes of Just East and Deliveroo. It will be a bit better.”

Price is now preparing for the Darts World Championship, which is set to start on Friday.

The Iceman left fans shocked at the beginning of this year when he wore ear defenders in his World Championship quarter-final against Gabriel Clements.

The PDC had given him permission to wear them but they later changed their rules and a repeat on the oche this year is not possible.

The cans divided opinion within the sport – some backed Price given the torment he had faced, while others claimed he had brought unnecessary attention to himself.

But Price says he was contacted online by parents who use them for their autistic kids who might be sensitive to loud noises in public spaces.

Price said: “It’s something I would do again – it was proving a point that it shouldn’t happen on that stage, but I did what I did.

“I can’t do it again because they are banned now. The PDC said no more headphones.

“I actually wanted to do a walk-on wearing them and with a hi-vis top, and glow sticks, then take them off to play, but the PDC wouldn’t know which way it would go. I don’t know.

“But don’t get me wrong, I don’t regret it – footballers lead out mascots with autism wearing headphones.

“And I had so many messages off parents with autistic kids who absolutely loved it.

“There were obviously more negatives than positives but if there were one or two positives to come out of it, happy days.

“It is what it is. I did it. I would do exactly the same thing again, but did it block out the crowd? No – if anything, it was 10 times worse. But I was just trying to prove a point.”
