Horse’s ‘absolutely savage’ name change causes storm after £900,000 purchase’s astonishing fall from grace
A RACEHORSE has been given an ‘absolutely savage’ name change following his astonishing fall from grace.
Australian racing sensation Strategy was bought as a yearling for a whopping 1.7million Australian dollars – around £900,000.
He is by champion sire I Am Invincible, a Group 1-placed sprinter in his own right whose progeny have gone onto earn millions and millions.
However, now a five-year-old gelding, Strategy never lived up to the billing.
So much so that, at a recent auction, he was sold for a paltry £2,500.
Steve Cunningham, who heads up the group of mates behind the purchase, decided the horse, under its new ownership, needed a radical name change.
Highlighting the horse’s failure on the racetrack and how much he cost originally, they came up with the title Onepointsevengone.
Cunningham said: “You see all the time these yearlings going for crazy prices when they don’t warrant it.

“Changing the name has a little to do with that as well you could say.
“Our goal is to buy a few tried horses and find their grade and hopefully get a result.
“I’m not saying we do things better than the bigger stables but for some horses, the smaller stable works.
“He’s a 58 mark horse that handles the synthetic and the wet going.
“We’ll see what happens but I’ve got a lot less to worry about at his price now!”
Onepointsevengone managed to win three races in all with five seconds from 26 starts, earning just £47,500.
But all punters cared about what his name change – and dig at the previous owners.
Several said the horse’s new title was ‘brutal’ while another wrote: “This has to be up there with one of the greats.”
Another commented: “Ouch! That’s got to burn for the previous owners.”
One post read: “That’s one way of sticking the knife in and then twisting it with a smile on your face.”
