It’s a race that has ripple effects for years to come, with Derby winner’s almost guaranteed to have a lucrative career at stud – just look at Sea The Stars and Frankel.
Last year’s race was won by Desert Crown, who romped to victory on just his third career start for Sir Michael Stoute.
He was a 5-2 winning favourite, but shocks are not rare, with Serpentine in 2020 (25-1) and Wings Of Eagles in 2017 (40-1) both causing massive surprise for Aidan O’Brien in recent years.
When is the 2023 Epsom Derby?
This year’s Derby is on Saturday, June 3, with the race starting at 1:30pm.
This is a big change from the usual 4:30pm slot and it will be the earliest start time in the race’s history.
That’s because of the potential clash with the FA Cup final, which is taking place on the same day.

It’s been confirmed that Frankie Dettori will ride Arrest for his long-time boss John Gosden.
It will be particularly fitting as he will be riding in the Juddmonte silks he was long associated with the mighty mare Enable in.
Epsom Derby 2023 ante-post tip
Dettori may well get his fairytale Epsom ending with the aforementioned Arrest.
There has to be a few doubts about the way he’ll hand Epsom, but a recent racecourse gallop will certainly have helped matters.
Placed at Group 1 level as a juvenile, he was impressive on return at Chester and is totally unexposed at the trip, giving him excellent claims.
