Rooney joined BBC Sport for their coverage of the FA Cup final and was asked about his new role with Argyle, which was announced earlier today.

He said: “I’m really excited to go in as Argyle’s new head coach. It was a thorough process with a lot of managers interviewed for the job.

“Thankfully the club found that I was the best person for the job and I can’t wait to get started and meet the players and staff and hopefully…”

Rooney was then interrupted by BBC host Gary Lineker who said: “Hopefully sign a footballer, which you’ve never done yet!”

To which a laughing Rooney replied: “Yeah! Obviously there’s a lot of work to do over the next month before we start pre-season training.”

Unbelievably Rooney has never signed a footballer as a manager in English football.

His time at Derby County was clouded with financial uncertainty and points deductions meaning the Rams could only get their hands on free agents and couldn’t buy any players.

While his 15-match spell at Birmingham City came in between transfer windows, meaning he didn’t see anyone come through the doors at St Andrews.

He did however sign a handful of stars during his days managing in the US where he took charge of MLS outfit D.C United.

The 38-year-old was responsible for additions such as Christian Benteke, Ravel Morrison and Mateusz Klich.
