But so far it has not gone to plan with DC United finishing bottom of the Eastern conference last season.

Rooney, 37, will be looking for a better season this time round and delivered a couple of rousing team talks to try and inspire his team in their opening game of the season.

Preparing to take on a Toronto side featuring players like ex-Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne and former Juventus winger Federico Bernardeschi, Rooney’s got his players fired-up before the game.

DC United released a video on Twitter showing his dressing room speech, where he predicted the events of the second-half.

He said: “I’ve seen some of the interviews from their side. They’ve come here expecting to win.

“I got asked a question in the press conference ‘what’s your expectations, because everyone else in the league don’t expect us to do anything.’ I don’t give a f— what anyone else thinks.

“Believe in yourselves as a group, as individuals. Be a team, whatever happens. It might be that we go a goal down, it doesn’t matter. Believe that you can get back in the game and go win the game.

The team-talk seemed to have done the job, with ex-Leeds star Mateusz Klich giving DC United a half-time lead.

But Rooney wanted more at the break, and gave another big speech.

He said: “Make sure we’re f***ing clinical lads. Kill the game off.”

And he told his troops to “switch your f***ing minds on”

But the second-half did not go to plan.

Bernardeschi equalised from the spot after 66 minutes before Mark-Anthony Kaye put Toronto 2-1 up in the 83rd minute.

But Rooney’s side roared back in sensational fashion.

Former Liverpool striker Christian Benteke equalised in the 90th minute before an incredible winner by Theodore Ku-DiPietro EIGHT minutes into stoppage time.

It is Columbus away up next for DC.
