In the 47th minute Son embarked on a darting run… only to find referee John Brooks in his way.

The ball trickled through Brooks’ legs, only for Son to be wiped out by a challenge moments later.

Brooks was forced to blow for a free-kick, even brandishing a yellow card to George Baldock as Son writhed in agony.

Son and Co were left in even more anguish at the final whistle, after being dumped out of the cup by the Blades.

Iliman Ndiaye mustered the game’s only goal, weaving through feeble challenges before slotting past Fraser Forster on 79 minutes.

Spurs opted to rest Harry Kane from the start, instead starting Richarlison up-front with Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura on the flanks.

They would turn to talisman Kane on 65 minutes, but even the England skipper couldn’t salvage a limp display.

Tottenham assistant boss Cristian Stellini apologised to fans for his side’s dreadful performance.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “If you don’t win a game like this its because something was not perfect and today our energy was not enough to put the opponent in a great difficulty.

“We had opportunities to score, but now we have to analyse the goal we conceded. In the moment if you concede a goal you need time to recover.

“There was more energy from the changes, but we have to improve a lot.

“I can only apologise to the fans for our performance and they deserve much more than this.”
