None were more relentless than defending champion Verstappen, who started in 15th and zoomed all the way to second place.
The Dutchman put his team-mate under serious pressure to maintain his lead and grab a big victory.
But Perez stayed composed in the face of a predatory Verstappen to take first place.
Sir Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile could only muster a fifth-placed finish after starting the race in seventh.
