Senegal secures knockout berth at 2022 World Cup

African champions, Senegal have qualified for the knockout stage after the all-important win over Ecuador. The Terenga Lions won 2-1 against the South American side.

Before the game, Group A was tight because Ecuador had not lost any match. At the Khalifa International stadium, Senegal gave their all to ensure they secure a berth at the knockout stage.

A first half penalty by Ismaila Saar put the African Champions ahead. Ecuador equalized in the second half through Moises Caicedo on the 67th minute.

Khalidou Koulibaly brought Senegal to life again after three minutes to make it 2-1. Ecuador then piled pressure on Senegal to get their equalizer but could not materialize.

This would be Senegal’s second time of qualifying for the knockout stages after doing so in 2022. That was also hosted in Asia by Japan and South Korea.

They are likely to face England after placing second behind Netherlands.

Morocco and Ghana are the two other African sides that are in better position to qualify for the next round. The Atlas Lions need a point to qualify whereas Ghana needs to win be sure of full qualification. But a draw would be enough to see Ghana through depending on the outcome of the other game.
