Police investigating as Roy Hodgson has missile thrown at him ‘by own fan’ after Crystal Palace defeat to Bournemouth

POLICE are reportedly investigating after Roy Hodgson allegedly had an object thrown at him by what appeared to be a Crystal Palace fan after their loss to Bournemouth.

Palace were beaten 2-0 at home by the Cherries on Wednesday night.

Goals from Marcos Senesi and Kieffer Moore proved the difference as the visitors left Selhurst Park with all three points.

The atmosphere around the ground turned toxic as the match progressed, with boos and groans heard inside the stadium.

Palace’s form has slumped in recent weeks as they risk being dragged into the relegation battle.

After the match, a supporter is said to have thrown an object at Hodgson, who was not hit by it, as he walked down the tunnel.

Security staff were quick to react in a bid to identify the fan who threw the object while the veteran manager claimed he was unaware of the incident and only learned of it afterwards.

Now The Athletic say that The Met are investigating as pressure mounts on the former England boss at Palace after a slide in results.

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper is reportedly being targeted to replace Hodgson if he leaves the City Ground.

Cooper’s side were thrashed 5-0 by Fulham on Wednesday as pressure mounts on the Forest gaffer.

The defeat to Bournemouth leaves Palace with just one win from their last eight league matches.

Hodgson’s side have also lost three of their four matches since last tasting victory against Burnley on November 4.

Asked about the incident after the match, Hodgson said: “I wasn’t aware of it. You’re saying there is a fan out there who doesn’t like me? I won’t lose any sleep over that.

“Obviously it wasn’t good enough. The fact is that the expectations are high hence the boos.

“The fact is the fans have been spoiled here in recent times, they’re used to seeing us do very well at home and get good results and this year we’ve not been able to do that.

“They’ve come here today, of course, thinking after our good point at West Ham that we would run all over and blow Bournemouth away but unfortunately they are false expectations because Bournemouth are not an easy team to blow away.

“I can’t blame them for a lack of effort, but in terms of quality of course, we weren’t able to produce the quality needed to win the game.”

The 76-year-old returned to the club in March to guide them to safety before extending his deal through until next summer.

However, a difficult festive period now follows for Palace, with matches against Liverpool and Manchester City to come this month.
