Newcastle ratings: Bruno Guimaraes shows why Toon so desperately missed him but Almiron has next to no impact

NEWCASTLE suffered heartbreak at the Carabao Cup final, after losing 2-0 to Man Utd at Wembley.

Despite having the best of the first half, they fell to two goals from Casemiro and an own goal from Sven Botman.

Loris Karius – 6

The deflection off Sven Botman for Rashford’s second would have bamboozled a lot of keepers, but Karius hardly covered himself in glory either as the ball fell over him. Made a couple of decent saves though, including to deny Bruno Fernandes right at the end.

Kieran Trippier – 7

A class act as always with brilliant delivery. Dan Burn should have done better with the right-back’s cross just before half-time.

Fabian Schar – 6

Beaten by Casemiro for the opener. Put his body on the line as shown by a nasty cut near his eye when clashing heads with Martinez. Got a yellow in the closing moments.

Sven Botman – 6

Had the unfortunate deflection for United’s killer second goal. Frustration got the better of him as he clashed with compatriot Weghorst and was booked for throwing the ball away.

Dan Burn – 6

Tried his best to get forward where he could but found it difficult against a compact United defence. Headed wide a good chance just before the break.

Sean Longstaff – 5

The local lad was the key to Newcastle making it into the final with his semi-final double over Southampton. But he was ineffective here and with Toon two down, was hooked at the break.

Bruno Guimaraes – 7

Newcastle had not won without him this season and you could see how he had been missed during his recent three-match ban. Instantly tried to dictate play and breathed confidence into their attack – but a few whacks meant he could not last the distance.

Joelinton – 7

Drove the ball forward well and showed good strength against compatriots Casemiro and Fred. Was booked for shoving over Antony and dragging down Casemiro in the same action. Almost headed in right at the end but was repelled by De Gea.

Miguel Almiron – 5

Fresh off signing a new contract this week, but the Paraguayan had next to no impact. A barn-storming run inside three minutes followed by a terrible pass summed up his afternoon.

Callum Wilson – 5

Just has not looked the same player since the World Cup. Did not have a sniff.

Allan Saint-Maximin – 6

Had Newcastle’s big chance while the scores were still level – but could not take it. Was Toon’s most dangerous player but lacked end product.

Alexander Isak (for Sean Longstaff at HT) – 5

Played in an unusual No10 role as Newcastle chased the game but did not make a difference.

Jacob Murphy (for Allan Saint-Maximim on 79) – 7

Fantastic strike from 30 yards flew just the wrong side of the post in the dying stages.

Joe Willock (for Bruno Guimaraes on 79) – 6

Injury meant he did not make the starting line-up which was a blow.
