The England goalkeeper was forced off with a shoulder injury against United and could miss the rest of the season.
Newcastle are understood to be assessing transfer options ahead of the window re-opening in January, with Martin Dubravka set to deputies until a replacement is found.
Former United goalkeeper De Gea is one player on the club’s shortlist, report the Daily Mail.
The Spaniard has been searching for a club since leaving the Red Devils in the summer but would likely demand big wages.
He earned £375,000 a week at Old Trafford but would reportedly be willing to accept a significant wage cut to join Newcastle.
