Man Utd star Jadon Sancho has an ‘attitude problem’ – Bayern would never sign him, says club legend

MARIO BASLER believes Bayern Munich would never sign a player with an ‘attitude problem’ like Jadon Sancho.

The ex-Germany midfielder, who scored for Bayern in Manchester United’s famous 1999 Champions League final win, says Sancho’s personality does not fit the Bavarian giants.

Red Devils winger Sancho is in first-team exile at Old Trafford following a public bust-up with boss Erik ten Hag over his attitude in training.

SunSport revealed he has since missed sessions at Carrington where he has been training with the academy.

The England star, 23, has been a huge flop since joining United from Bayern’s rivals Borussia Dortmund for £73million in 2021.

Basler, 51, said: “Bayern are very strict and, when they sign a player, his personality will have to fit in with the club.

“Sancho may be a good footballer but Bayern would not sign him because he’s not what they look for in a person.

“Sancho was already a troublemaker in Dortmund. His attitude is a problem and he has to change it.”

However, Basler is blown away by the form of Sancho’s fellow Englishman Harry Kane at Bayern.

Three Lions skipper Kane has scored an astonishing 18 Bundesliga goals in 13 games — leaving him 23 off Robert Lewandowski’s record single-season tally in Germany’s top flight.

Basler, who won two Bundesliga crowns and Euro ’96, added: “Harry will be a Bayern great, one of the best strikers to ever play for the club. He can smash Lewandowski’s record.

“Up front, Bayern are very strong, with Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman and Kane, who is a goal machine.”

For Basler the days when everyone dreaded facing United are history.

This modern-day team is a far cry from the legendary ones he used to play against.

He added: “In 1999 they had a terrific squad but that’s over now! And it will be tough to get back to those heights. Back then they had great players like Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Teddy Sheringham.

“In recent years they’ve had some problems, there’s been a lot of unrest, there have been lots of managerial changes and they have not won the league for a long time. In Germany they are no longer what they once were, the biggest English name.

“They don’t have one single player where I think: ‘He’s 100 per cent guaranteed to start at Bayern right now’.”

Ten Hag’s men, fresh from a 3-0 humiliation to Bournemouth, could pounce on Bayern’s wobbly defence, which capitulated in a 5-1 defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Basler said: “They only have three centre-backs. Matthijs de Ligt is out injured and Dayot Upamecano is injury-prone which affects the team’s stability. They concede a goal in almost every game, it’s their main conundrum.

“On Tuesday, they may decide to rest some players, which boosts  United’s chances of winning — but Bayern won’t want to lose.

“I think there’ll be a winner in Copenhagen v Galatasaray and United may have to settle for third place.”

Basler’s curling free-kick past Peter Schmeichel opened the scoring on that dramatic night in Barcelona in 1999.

Yet with the Germans 1-0 up, he was hooked on 87 minutes by boss Ottmar Hitzfeld as Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turned the game on its head in stoppage time.

He said: “Nobody knows whether we’d have won with me. It’s one of those substitutions managers make to waste time, it wasn’t a mistake.

“We were the better team that night but wasted so many chances.

“Manchester United capitalised on some poor defending. The better team didn’t win but I’ve long moved on.”
