Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel publicly calls out Erik ten Hag and singles out two flops who let Red Devils down

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Peter Schmeichel publicly called out Erik ten Hag after last night’s dismal draw with Galatasaray.

The Red Devils twice blew a two-goal lead in Turkey as the hosts clawed back a 3-3 draw.

Despite the game being a thriller, United are now on the brink of being knocked out of the Champions League group stage.

And boss Ten Hag laid the blame for the draw on his defenders.

Speaking to Schmeichel, who works as a pundit for CBS Sport, Ten Hag said: “I’m disappointed. We did many things very good.

“But when you are twice leading 2-0 and 3-1, you have to defend better. It was poor defending as a team so we should have done that better.”

But Ten Hag’s comments provoked ire from Schmeichel, who insisted United’s defenders played well as a unit.

Telling the Dutchman that the defeat was down to individual errors instead, Schmeichel retorted: “You say poor defending as a team?

“I actually have the impression the defence worked well today and defended well but it was mistakes by individuals.

“Are you worried you don’t have the right kind of players to take the team to where you want to be?”

APHe also criticised Anthony Martial’s lack of effort up top[/caption]

Ten Hag answered: “No, we are in a project and so we have to learn from this and take it from here.

“It’s all very positive how we can play and perform and to which levels we can achieve but football is a game of mistakes and details make a difference.

“We made some mistakes as a team and we got punished for it.”

Later on, Schmeichel told the CBS Sport studio that he felt blame lied specifically with goalkeeper Andre Onana and sub striker Anthony Martial.

On Onana, he said: “I think the back four played very well today, I don’t think they could have done much more.

“Again though, you can’t argue, the mistakes by the goalkeeper are very, very expensive.

“Every time a goalkeeper makes a mistake, it is a goal, that is just a fact of life. When you play at this level, every little mistake is being penalised and you have to learn that.”

On Martial’s impact from the bench, Schmeichel added: “You have to look at when Rasmus Hojlund came off, a lot of pressure from the front disappeared.

“The guy you put in (Martial) did not do anything. You had someone (Hojlund) who worked really hard for the team but suddenly you don’t have that pressure, which gives the other team opportunities to pass the ball around.”
