Erik ten Hag has confirmed Van de Beek will leave in JanuaryRex

But he has only started 15 Premier League games over the last two seasons – and played two league minutes this season.

Speaking about the Dutchman, Ten Hag – who managed Van de Beek as Ajax – said: “I can see he has to play for his career and for everything.”

After scoring on his Red Devils debut – a 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace – there was hope Van de Beek would become a mainstay in the Red Devils midfield.

However, a lack of opportunities paired with a raft of injury issues have meant his time at Old Trafford has turned into a nightmare.

Van de Beek missed the majority of last season after suffering ligament damage in his knee.

He was close to joining Real Socieded in the summer before the transfer fell through.

On the failed move, he told Diario AS: “I was close to going to Real Sociedad, but at the last minute, the clubs could not reach an agreement.”

However, he believes a move could still be on in January.

He said: “The time comes when a decision has to be made.

“I have to start playing games very soon, if it’s not possible at United, then I will go to another club.

“I think this is a healthy ambition. I make a good living at United, but money has never been my motivation.”
