Legendary former Man Utd chief reveals biggest regret that saw Roy Keane booted out of Old Trafford

DAVID GILL says his biggest regret in his time at Manchester United was Roy Keane and Sir Alex Ferguson falling out.

Ferguson got rid of his club captain after he had let fly in an MUTV interview over the team’s performance in losing 4-1 at Middlesbrough in October 2005.

The interview was never shown and Sir Alex insisted Keane face the Man United squad and explain his criticisms.

But after a fiery meeting in which Keane also turned on the manager and his assistant Carlos Queiroz, Sir Alex decided it was time to part.

Keane was called to a meeting with Ferguson and then-Chief Executive Gill at the training ground, and he was out.

The pair have never made it up since, even to the point where Keane stopped Ferguson from addressing the crowd after he returned for his testimonial.

Speaking to Rio Ferdinand’s on his FIVE YouTube Channel, Gill said: “Roy was a difficult situation.

“There was the MUTV interview and the decision was made for him to go there and then.

“For me it was the right decision at the time and a very quick one.

“One of my regrets is that they were both so great for each other and to see them falling out is a pity.

“He was a fantastic captain and they meant a lot to each other and to see that break down is very difficult.

“They were two highly motivated individuals and to come to that…

“We should celebrate what Roy did for the team because he was fantastic for many, many years.”

Asked if they would ever be reconciled, Gill added: “I can’t speak for them.

“I would like to think so but I wouldn’t say so at the moment.”
