The injury did prevent Green from bowling in South Africa’s second innings, but Australia still took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series after bowling the Proteas out for 204.

Green explained what it was like to return to the crease.

He said: “I think that‘s what happens when you get injured – your game simplifies in a way.

“There’s only a few shots you can play and everything apart from that you have to defend.

“It‘s a funny thing when you’re in that mindset, you’re actually really clear on what you have to do.”

And the all-rounder took to Instagram to reveal the extent of the damage, which has ruled him out of the final test.
