I’m an ex-Premier League star who won a 21inch colour TV for my Man of the Match display… but I had to wheel it home

FORMER Premier League star Carl Leaburn has lifted the lid on the time he won a 21inch colour TV for his Man of the Match performance.

But despite being a top ace for Charlton at the time, the ex-striker had to WHEEL his prize home.

Leaburn came through the ranks at The Valley before making his senior debut in 1987.

He went on to play 322 times for Charlton, scoring 53 goals in the process.

And Leaburn became a cult hit with fans who relished his role as the team’s targetman.

He also enjoyed a Premier League spell with Wimbledon, and featured briefly for QPR before ending his career in 2005 with Grays Athletic.

However, Leaburn was once given a bizarre award for a man-of-the-match performance in the Carabao Cup.

Back in the 90s, it was known as the Rumbelows Cup after being sponsored by the electronics store.

And as a prize for his excellent show on the pitch, Leaburn was gifted a 21-inch colour television.

Charlton relived the moment on their club TV channel, with hilarious footage showing Leaburn wearing a colourful tracksuit while picking up his telly.

However, there was no help for the striker in taking it back to his place.

And with TV cameras waiting outside the shop, Leaburn was forced to drag his prize home on a trolley.

But the Charlton legend still looks back on the time fondly.

Leaburn said: “Getting the TV, it did go into my bedroom.

“Look at that tracksuit, fresh face, all my teeth! 

“The TV was in my bedroom for many years but I couldn’t even tell you where it is now.

“It was a good feeling to get that man of the match award.”
