A FORMER Manchester United team-mate has revealed how a chance meeting with old team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo helped him score with Miss California.

The former defender had snuck out for a date with the American beauty while on a pre-season trip to Los Angeles in 2016.

The player in question is Danny Simpson, who had just played a key role for Leicester City in their miraculous Premier League title-winning campaign.

That summer was also a celebration for Ronaldo, who has just been named the Saudi Pro League player of the month, after he helped Portugal to Euro 2016 glory.

Simpson, 36, had come through the ranks at Old Trafford and played alongside the forward before his exit from the Red Devils in 2010.

But he went on to write his name in folklore at Leicester, and he revealed an amusing tale of what followed their title-winning campaign during an appearance on Under the Cosh.

Simpson said: “I’ve got a story about that summer in LA.

“We went to LA on a pre-season tour, playing against PSG, we were thinking ‘what are we doing here’ we normally go Dublin and we’re now in LA.”

The ex-Newcastle, QPR and Huddersfield ace then revealed how he was asked on a date through a friend of a former winner of Miss California – which led to him sneaking out of the team hotel to meet her in a steak restaurant in central LA.

Simpson was soon regretting it as the date turned into a nightmare – that was until an unlikely appearance from Ronaldo changed everything.

He said: “It was painful right, but anyway it weren’t going great and I got a little tap on my shoulder.

“I’ve looked up and it’s only (Cristiano) Ronaldo. He’s gone ‘Simmo’ and I’ve gone ‘Ronny!’

“I’ve got up and given him a little hug and that. Anyway we had a little chat because we’re obviously in pre-season and he’s won the Euros so he’s on an extended break.

“I’ve sat back down and she’s gone ‘how do you know Ronaldo?’

“I’ve played it down and said ‘I used to play with him’ like it was nothing. From that second she completely changed.”

Simpson concluded: “Honestly it was literally a complete different person all because Ronaldo said ‘hello’ to me so cheers Ronny.”
