Horse racing tips: Templegate’s huge 17-2 Chester Cup NAP and 1-2-3 prediction

TEMPLEGATE tackles a massive Friday of action confident of banging in a few winners.

The big race is the Chester Cup at 3.40pm – and our man has picked out his 1-2-3 prediction below.

THE SHUNTER (3.40 Chester, nap)

Can add the Chester Cup to his amazing racing CV. His incredible career has seen him win over fences at the Cheltenham Festival. But he’s no slouch on the Flat either as he showed when winning the Cesarewitch last season. Top-class trainer Emmet Mullins had him in prime condition to take that marathon at Newmarket — and he did it with plenty left in the tank. That was just his sixth run on the level and, while you would never say an 11-year-old can improve, he can certainly cope with a 6lb rise in the weights. Given how he has stepped up to every challenge thrown at him, The Shunter should have no problem with Chester’s tricky turns. You may worry about his draw in stall 13 at a track where low boxes generally do best. Yet the past four Chester Cup winners came from double figures and my fancy likes to come from behind and pick his way through anyway.

1st The Shunter
2nd Magellan Strait
3rd Falcon Eight

ISRAR (3.05 Chester, nb)

Caught the eye with a close-up third on comeback at Sandown 14 days ago. He saves his best for this trip and won’t mind the decent ground. He can score for the Gosdens who are in decent form.

EPHESUS (2.05 Chester, treble)

Looked to be crying out for this longer trip when third on debut at Dundalk last time. He can take a major step up for Aidan O’Brien.
