Gylfi Sigurdsson, 34, wakes up unemployed as he’s dumped Danish club Lyngby after playing just five games in six months

GYLFI SIGURDSSON’S football comeback has stalled after Danish club Lyngby showed him the door after just SIX MONTHS.

The former Iceland international, 34, was a free agent after leaving Everton following two years of not playing.

Back in August he was handed a lifeline after two years in the wilderness he penned a 12-month deal with Superliga club Lyngby.

But the Copenhagen club has now parted ways with the midfielder after he failed to recover from getting injured in January.

Lyngby announced: “After his injury break, the Icelander will not return to Lyngby Boldklub.  We wish Gylfi Sigurdsson all the best for the future.

“It was amid great attention that he was presented at Lyngby at the end of August 2023.

“But just over six months later, the Icelander is now finished as a Royal Blue.”

Director of football Niclas Kjeldsen said: “We would like to thank Gylfi for his time at Lyngby.   He joined the club after a long break, and we hoped that together we could rediscover his former level.

“Unfortunately it has turned out that it takes too long to get back to it, which is why he now has to do something else.

“Gylfi has been a good acquaintance, the breakup is happening without any drama, and we wish him all the best in the future.”

Sigurdsson played six times for Lyngby, scoring two goals.

He said: “I really appreciate that Lyngby gave me the chance to return to football, and I will always be very grateful for that..

“It means a lot to me.  I will always remember the reception I received from the fans at my first home game.”

Sigurdsson made 319 Premier League appearances, scoring 67 goals, during his two stints in England.

As well as the Toffees, he played in the top-flight for Swansea and Tottenham and had stints with Reading, Shrewsbury, Crewe and Germans Hoffenheim.

He also has 80 caps for Iceland and played for his country at both the Euros and World Cup.

Sigurdsson is now expected to join a club in his home country.
