Gordon McQueen funeral sees Scottish football greats pay tribute to Scotland & Man Utd legend alongside daughter Hayley

SCOTTISH football greats joined together to pay tribute to Scotland icon Gordon McQueen at his funeral.

The former Leeds and Manchester United legend passed away earlier this month at the age of 70 after a battle with dementia.

The sad news was confirmed by daughter Hayley on June 15th, who said she was “beyond heartbroken” to lose her dad.

A colossus of football in the 1970s and 1980s, McQueen featured at two World Cup for Scotland.

After breaking into first team football at St Mirren, it was at the very top of the English game where McQueen really made his mark.

With six years at Leeds and seven years with Manchester United, McQueen became one of his generation’s very best defenders.

McQueen was a league winner at Elland Road, adding the FA Cup during his time with United.

He was twice named to the PFA Team of the Year and was elected into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2012.

After retirement, McQueen went on to become a hugely popular TV pundit.

He was part of the team on Soccer Saturday for a number of years, alongside the likes of Alan McInally and Charlie Nicholas.

The service took place at St Mary’s Cathedral in Coulby Newham on the outskirts of Middlesbrough.

McQueen had worked at Middlesbrough FC during Bryan Robson’s time as manager, returning as a scout in 2008, remaining in the area after leaving that role.

A piper playing bagpipes led the funeral cortege into the service, with McQueen’s coffin draped in a Saltire.

A Scotland cap was also resting on top in recognition of McQueen’s tremendous footballing career for his country.

McQueen’s family, including TV presenter Hayley, gathered to say goodbye along with a number of footballing greats.

Former Scotland star Gordon Strachan, who was a teammate of McQueen’s at Manchester United in the 1980s, was in attendance.

Joe Jordan, a fellow legendary figure of the Scotland team of the 1970s, was also there to pay tribute to his friend.

Eddie Gray, a teammate for both club, Leeds, and country, was there to pay his respects.

Manchester United legends Bryan Robson and Gary Pallister were also in attendance.

Robson and McQueen were teammates at Old Trafford and, as mentioned, also worked together in a coaching capacity at Middlesbrough.

Much-loved Sky host Jeff Stelling was also in attendance.

He was in the Soccer Saturday hot-seat during McQueen’s long association with the popular results programme.

Manchester United left a bouquet of flowers carrying an emotional message.

It read: “In memory of Gordon. With forever-lasting love and respect for a great player and a great man. From everyone at Manchester United.”

McQueen, capped 30 times by Scotland, was remembered at Hampden before the Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia last week.

Players and fans observed a moment of applause with a picture of McQueen on the screens.
