Despite taking two sets to tie-breaks, he eventually lost 6-7, 2-6, 6-7.
The Aussie warrior also lost the 1998 US Open final to Patrick Rafter.
And at the peak of his powers he was ranked 8th in the world in 1999.
Despite not winning either Grand Slam final, he still banked an impressive £5.5million in prize money after playing from 1994 to 2008.

He looks very different to his playing days when he boasted dark hair and a shaven face.
Philippoussis boasted a mass of grey stubble as he enjoyed a walk with his dog and members of his family.
Just four years he took part in a doubles match, even helping himself to a drink from the crowd.
And in 2021, Philippoussis revealed his “shame” after having to ask friends to buy him food during his career.
He said: “I was out for a few months. I couldn’t afford much, actually. I had to ask friends just to shop for food.
“We would always, just, for seven days in a row we’d have this cabbage pasta that ends up being one of my favourites but my mum calls it ‘poor people’s food’ because it’s so simple, it’s just cabbage with some spices and pasta.
“I felt very much ashamed because they gave their dream for me and my responsibility was to look after them.
“I was in a dark place and had depression. There’s no greater pain in my heart than watching my loved ones suffer because of my actions.”
