Hamann thinks his compatriot Nagelsmann would be a suitable candidate – the German has previously been linked to Tottenham and Chelsea.

At 36 years old he is still young but has experience managing a big club, having left Bayern Munich in March after two years at the club.

Hamann pointed to the German as a candidate for the United job, telling Boyle Sports: “Nagelsmaan has done well and he did good things at Bayern.

“He’s an up-and-coming manager who has shown he can win titles, even if was unfortunate in the Champions League.

“He’d certainly be somebody you’d have a good feeling about. He knows how to play football, but it depends if he was backed.

“You need to back your manager for two or three seasons, and I don’t know if that’s the case at United.

“There’s a lot of chaos at Old Trafford. However, I don’t think Julian would be a bad choice.”

However, the Red Devils would have to wait to hire Nagelsmann after he was appointed Germany manager in September.

He signed a short-term deal until July 31, 2024 – meaning he will oversee Germany’s Euro 2024 campaign.

Naglesmann is excited to be managing at the “special” tournament, which takes place on home soil.

He said: “We have a European Championship in our own country. This is something special – something that happens once every few decades.

“I subordinate everything to this fact of having a great tournament in a great country. I have a great desire to take on this challenge.
