Fans slam BBC’s ‘absolute disgrace’ SPOTY 2023 snub as six-person shortlist is confirmed

FANS have slammed the BBC’s six-person list for Sports Personality of the Year after a key omission.

The six-person list includes cricketer Stuart Broad, jockey Frankie Dettori, England keeper Mary Earps, wheelchair tennis star Alfie Hewett, heptathlon star Katarina Johnson-Thompson and golfer Rory McIlroy.

But fans were left fuming by Ronnie O’Sullivan‘s snub from the list.

His surprise omission came despite his UK Championship victory this month.

His victory saw him become the oldest ever winner at the age of 47… Three days before his 48th birtday.

Incredibly, that makes him both the youngest and the oldest ever winner of the tournament.

O’Sullivan scooped up his first ever UK Championship 30 years ago when he was just 17.

‘The Rocket’ also won the Shanghai Masters title when he beat reigning world champion Luca Brecel 11-9 in the final.

Fans were fuming at O’Sullivan’s snub, with one posting on X: “Ronnie O’Sullivan not being in the SPOTY nominees is an absolute joke.”

Another wrote: “Absolutely disgusting that Ronnie O Sullivan is not on this list shame on you BBC.”

A third posted: “Another year goes by and Ronnie O’Sullivan is shamefully and inexplicably overlooked for the #BBCSPOTY award.

“Holding almost every meaningful record in snooker and actually having a genuine personality isn’t enough, it seems. Utterly bizarre.”

O’Sullivan was nominated for the award last year, which was won by Beth Mead.
