Ex-Arsenal & Chelsea star Olivier Giroud, 37, drops huge retirement hint and admits he nearly quit after 2022 World Cup

OLIVIER GIROUD has hinted that he could hang up his international boots next year.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea star is approaching the end of his career which has seen him score 277 goals in all competitions.

Giroud, 37, is currently starring for AC Milan and has won the Serie A title once since arriving at the club in 2021.

The Frenchman has enjoyed a trophy-filled career, having won titles in France, England and Italy.

The striker has also had success on an international level, having won the World Cup in 2018.

However, he suffered heartbreak in the Euros after France lost the final to Portugal in 2016.

Giroud has admitted that the tournament in Germany next summer will “probably” be his last.

He told TéléFoot: “I’m not planning beyond the short-term.

“The most important thing is to be fit and competitive, these Euros are an objective.

“We nearly got it in 2016, and it is a trophy that I would love to win with France.

“It will maybe, probably, be my last competition, but I can’t tell you what will happen after.

Giroud also admitted that if France wins Euro 2024, then he will “bow out”.

The former Montpellier hitman went on to reveal that he almost called it a day during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

He then told RMC Sport: “I’m just missing these Euros. If we win it, I’ll bow out.

“It will probably be the case if we don’t get to the end as well. I’m making the most of every minute.

“I said to some guys that if we won the 2022 World Cup, I’d retire.

“But I am hungry for titles with my country.”

Giroud and France have been drawn against the Netherlands and Austria in the group stages of the Euros.

The final team in the group is not yet known but will be a play-off winner from one of Poland, Wales, Finland or Estonia.
