ARSENAL face losing Mohamed Elneny for the rest of the season after being ruled out with a “significant” knee injury.

The midfielder sustained an injury in training and was forced to go under the knife.

Arsenal confirmed the news in a statement and leaves Elneny’s season in doubt.  

A statement read: “Mo has had successful surgery in London and will be ruled out for an extended period of time.

“A more detailed timescale will be established once the early stages of rehabilitation have been completed.

“Everyone at the club will be offering Mo all the support he needs and working hard with him so he can return to action as soon as possible.”

Elneny, 30, has managed only eight appearances this season after suffering a thigh problem.

And his latest knee injury looks to have cut short his season while Arsenal still lead the Premier League.

Elneny’s contract is up at the end of the season and could have played his last Arsenal game if his option to extend is not triggered.

Despite the midfield headache, the Gunners are closing in on a replacement in the form of Chelsea’s Jorginho.

The rival London clubs have agreed a £12million deal for the Italian, 31, whose Blues deal is up in the summer.

Mikel Arteta looks ready to move on from first-choice target Moises Caicedo, 21, after Brighton turned down bids of £60m and £70m.

Arsenal are instead ready to hand Champions League winner Jorginho an 18-month deal, with the option to extend it by a year.
