‘Wow! I’ve hit the big time’ – Ben Foster reveals how much he earned from his first-ever Man Utd contract

BEN FOSTER has revealed how much money he earned from his first-ever Manchester United contract.

Foster, 39, recalled what he felt when he saw his first pay packet at Old Trafford, where he was at the time a fresh-faced goalkeeper.

Speaking on his own Fozcast, Foster broke down his first-ever contract at the club.

He explained that all contracts across football run out on June 30th and that his basic salary went up every year he was at Man United under the contract.

Foster said: “So £142,000 for the first year, which basically works out at about £3,000 a week. So for that first year I was basically going straight out on loan to Watford.

“And Man Utd continued to pay my wages. 100% in that first year.

“I remember them saying to me ‘listen we just want you out on loan to play games and stuff like that, see how you get on.’

“So they were happy to cover the wages, it was £3,000 a week.

“But me personally I’m like, £3,000 a week? Wow!

“You think after tax you’re coming out with £6,500 or something like that.

“From £600 a week (at Stoke City) yeah, to £6,500 a month, honestly, it was like wow I’ve hit the big time, this is massive money.”

It was also revealed that Foster earned £250,000 in his second year due to his salary increasing.

After going out on loan for two seasons Foster then returned to Old Trafford, where he ended up playing second fiddle to Edwin van der Sar for much of his time at the club.

All-told, Foster only made 23 appearances in a United shirt before leaving the club in 2010 to join Birmingham.

Foster earned eight England caps too before eventually retiring at Watford at the end of last season.

One of the most famous games of his career came in the Manchester derby in 2009 – a 4-3 thriller that pulled up some questionable goalkeeping performances.

And Foster revealed he was “nailed” by Sir Alex Ferguson following his performance.
