Sun’s top tipster Templegate gives readers huge day at Cheltenham Festival after picking three winners

THE SUN shone through the rain at the Cheltenham Festival as our top tipper Templegate gave punters a soaraway day.

His magnificent treble of winners on a drizzly Day Two thrilled thousands of readers who jumped on board with his bets.

And Templegate was not the only one to turn on the style — as thousands of racegoers got glammed up despite the gloomy weather on Ladies Day.

This year the Jockey Club, which runs the course, relaxed its dress code to be more inclusive. But many still chose to dress up to the nines for the traditional day out.

Anna Miller, 24, a marketing director from Solihull, said: “I don’t care about the weather.

“It’s all about having a good time with your friends and of course you have to look your best — that’s what the races are all about.”

Charlotte Clinkard, 21, a student from Lincoln, added: “The weather might be miserable but it’s no reason not to look good.”

Nicole Garvey, 25, who came from Kilkenny in Ireland, said: “It would be nicer if it was dry but you make the most of the situation. We feel warm inside.”

Racing fan Queen Consort Camilla arrived clutching a see-through umbrella, and wearing a brooch of a horse owned by the late Queen.

Her niece, Zara Tindall, and ex-rugby player hubby Mike were among a host of famous faces who enjoyed the action.

A string of favourites romped home throughout the day to lash the bookmakers.

They included Energumene owned by Brighton and Hove Albion boss Tony Bloom.

The pro-poker player reportedly won £1million after staking a £400,000 wager on his runner in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

He was presented with the trophy and £172,000 prize money by Camilla.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted. I had a few quid on, so I think we are quids in.”

Alex Ferguson’s horse Hermes Allen could expect the hair dryer treatment from the ex-Man United boss after it rolled in sixth in the first race.

This Morning presenter Josie Gibson said she lost £200 on Sir Gerhard in the second.

And former Tottenham manager and I’m A Celebrity winner Harry Redknapp’s horse Back On The Lash failed to finish in the fifth.

But Harry said: “It’s a great atmosphere and a great spectacle.” Irish jockey John Gleeson, 18, had to ask for time off from school to take part in the festival. And it paid off as he won on favourite A Dream To Share — tipped by Templegate — in the final race.

The horse was trained by John Kiely, 85, the oldest ever to win at Cheltenham.

Bookies were left licking their wounds.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: “It’s been a washout and we are on the ropes heading to Day Three.”
