Punters see £13,000 go up in flames after 1-100 in-running ‘winner’ is disqualified and jockey banned
PUNTERS were left furious after a favourite that hit 1-100 in-running was disqualified after crossing the line first.
Nurburgring was rated 93 on the Flat for Joseph O’Brien and was sent off 7-4 when making a winning hurdling debut at Killarney.
Punters were adamant he was going to remain unbeaten and he was sent off 8-15 on the step up in grade.
He travelled smoothly into contention under JJ Slevin and took the lead doing cartwheels approaching the last.
5-1 shot Wodhooh wouldn’t go down without a fight, however, and battled all the way to the line.
Favourite backers were sweating bullets as the pair crossed the line as one, but Nurburgring edged ahead to score by a short-head.
Although it looked like a fair fight, a stewards’ enquiry was called and Nurburgring was sensationally disqualified.
The stewards took a dim view of Nurburgring’s rider JJ Slevin too, banning him for four days in the aftermath.
Although some bookmakers will have paid double-result, many didn’t and punters were furious with the decision.
One on Twitter said: “Why am I not surprised that they overturn a favourite winning.”
Another fumed: “The favourite was well backed so the result has to be amended – crooks.”
It wasn’t a day for short-price favourites, as the 2-5 Willie Mullins-trained Saint Sam fell from the lead in the feature race.
Some fingers were well and truly burned… ouch.
