Punter panic after jockey’s interview appears to cast doubt on Constitution Hill making comeback at Ascot

PUNTERS were panicking on Friday after a Nico de Boinville interview appeared to cast huge doubt on Constitution Hill making his comeback on Saturday.

Asked whether he was looking forward to getting back on the Champion Hurdle fav at Ascot, de Boinville could say only: “Let’s see.”

He added: “The sun’s out. I could do with it clouding over.

“We’ve got a day to see what we think. It looks the perfect starting point for him. Fingers crossed.”

Oddschecker responded by removing Constitution Hill from their betting markets.

The fear is the ground could be too good for Nicky Henderson’s stable star to make his long-awaited return.

In response to De Boinville’s interview on Sky Sports, one punter said: “That’s code for ‘he’s not going to run’.”

While another said: “So yeah that’s Constitution Hill going to be a non-runner. I can smell it.”

One post read: “Ascot in danger of drying out very quickly. Constitution Hill set to be a late non-runner tomorrow?”

While another said: “Constitution Hill NR pending.”

Crucially, though, the horse’s odds on the Betfair Exchange remained the same.

Constitution Hill is a 1.23 (2-9) chance for the Coral Hurdle at 2.40.

Ascot Clerk of the Course Chris Stickels confirmed the ground is ‘drying out’ in the sun and wind.

He said: “There may be some good ground creeping into it with this breeze.

“It’s amazing how the soil has absorbed all that rain, quicker than I’ve ever known in November.”

The going is officially described as good to soft currently.
