Incredibly, that broke his own old benchmark by just £74 – and was helped by winning £77,151 on the final day of the season at Sandown last Saturday.

The 61-year-old racing legend celebrated claiming the jumps racing championship by collecting his trophy with girlfriend Poppy and baby boy Henry.

Nicholls, whose season highlights included Bravemansgame winning the King George and Stay Away Fay’s Albert Bartlett success, opened up on the rigours of being a new dad at his age late last year.

He admitted he ‘wasn’t the most popular person’ during the birth, which came on Gold Cup day 2022.

Nicholls said he ‘got into all sorts of trouble’ owing to his commitment to runners during Poppy’s pregnancy.

The Ditcheat dynamo told the Racing Post: “I was quite proud of myself that day but I got myself in all sorts of trouble.

“I had a runner in the Foxhunter at 4.10pm and was back at Yeovil hospital for 7.30pm.

“I thought I did well and I went to Kempton the next day but I wasn’t the most popular person.”

Nicholls, who has been married three times, has kept his relationship with Somerset-born horsewoman Poppy, who is around half his age, relatively low key.

The trainer has three daughters – including TV star Megan and promising jockey Olive – from previous relationships.

Nicholls had 163 winners in all last season – but highlighted a couple of his exciting bumper prospects to put in the trackers for next year.

He told Betfair: “Captain Teague is one of a number of exciting bumper horses, there is Marvellous Mick, Larchmont Lass, Inthewaterside – the list goes on and on.

“I think we had 20 bumper winners from 18 different horses and they can all go novice hurdling next season which is really exciting.

“We will have 16 horses running in bumpers next year, so we have got a nice production line of young horses for next year.”
