NFF President, Pinnick Says He Is Stepping Down

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick, has announced he is retiring in September 2022.

Naija News understands that the 51-year-old had shown interest in a third term but the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar watered down his bid.

Recall that the Nigerian national football team on March 29, 2022, drew 1-1 with the Black Stars of Ghana in the return leg of the final round qualifiers for this year’s World Cup.

The game result was unfavourable to the Super Eagles as the three-time African champions got eliminated based on an away goal rule.

Super Eagles’ disqualification stirred a barrage of reactions from Nigerians who have since called for the immediate sacking of the NFF president, including his team members.

President Muhammadu Buhari had also lamented the development.

Immediately after the match ended, some of the aggrieved fans invaded the pitch and vandalised facilities at the stadium.

The players were also not spared as some of the angry fans attempted to attack them physically but were restrained due to the timely intervention of the security personnel on duty.

Due to the development, Austin Eguavoen also announced his resignation alongside other members of the team who were sacked by the NFF.

The sacked crew included ex-internationals like Emmanuel Amuneke and Joseph Yobo.

Meanwhile, Pinnick’s current tenure expires in September.

In an interview on Arise TV, he said his involvement in football administration over the years has taken a toll on his family.

“It has been a very turbulent ride for Nigerian football. I’m eligible to run according to the statutes. Do I want to run? It’s a no-no. My family is very key to me. They said it’s taking a toll on me and the family. They believe that I’ve done my best, and it’s time to move on. It’s a regrettable decision, but it’s the best.”
