NEWCASTLE are trying to hijack Tottenham’s bid to sign Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, according to reports.

The Italy international, 23, has been heavily linked with Antonio Conte’s side in the January transfer window.

Spurs were understood to be interested in a loan move with the option to buy.

Borussia Dortmund and West Ham have also reportedly been monitoring his situation.

However, according to journalist Tancredi Palmeri, Newcastle have now emerged as a potential destination for Zaniolo after offering Roma £31million for the Serie A side’s No22.

The opening bid was rejected by the Italian outfit, but Eddie Howe‘s men could yet return with a second offer.

Roma have slapped a £35m release clause on Zaniolo.

But Jose Mourinho‘s side are already monitoring potential replacements in case Zaniolo leaves this month.

The versatile midfielder has contributed two goals and three assists in 17 appearances this season.

He joined Roma from Inter Milan in 2018 and has since registered 24 goals and 18 assists in 128 matches for the club.
