Liverpool teammates Sadio Mane and Mohammed Salah will face off again as they battle it out for a slot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Senegal and Egypt will clash in yet another titanic encounter in the play off for the FIFA World Cup. The two African giants clashed at the finals of the 2021 African Cup of Nations. This will be the 13th time the two sides clash; Egypt has had the better of their previous meetings, 7 wins, 1 draw and 4 wins for Senegal.
Mohammed Salah who captained his Egyptain side to the finals in Cameroon lost on penalties to his teammate and friend. Sadio Mane’s kick ensured that Senegal won their first ever African Cup.
This would be the second in a three straight fight as The Pharaohs of Egypt play host to the Terenga Lions of Senegal in Cairo. Both countries represented Africa at the last World Cup in 2018 and hosted by Russia. But one would have to drop off for the other to get a successive appearance.
Mane and Salah would go a long way to decide who goes through and who drops out. A goal from Sadio Mane would see him become Senegal’s all time leading goal scorer with 30 goals. He is tied 29 with Henri Camara. Meanwhile Salah is far from reaching that feat as he is second for Egypt and has 47 goals and 21 more adrift of the 68 scored by Ahmed Hassan.
Senegal has played at the FIFA Mundial on two occasions; 2002 and 2018. They lost to Cameroon in the 2002 African Cup of Nations but had a fantastic tournament in Korea later that year as they got to the Quarter finals. They difiled all odds to qualify ahead of then defending champions, France.
On the other side of the coin, Egypt played at the 1934 World Cup in Italy. They also appeared in 1990 in Italy and had their third qualification in 2018 after beating Ghana in the final qualifying series.
The two wingers for Liverpool would have to become enemies in the next five days; who would laugh last ? Mane or Salah ?
