Man Utd’s Elanga Subjected To Online Racist Abuse After FA Cup Exit
Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga was subjected to online racist abuse after the FA Cup penalty shootout loss to Middlesbrough on Friday.
A spokesperson for Meta, the company which owns Instagram, where the abuse took place, said it has already removed a number of comments on Elanga’s page and its investigation is ongoing.
Elanga missed the decisive penalty in a 7-8 shootout defeat to Middlesbrough as United suffered a shock cup exit after the match ended 1-1 following extra-time at Old Trafford.
Recall that Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup on Friday night lost 8-9 on penalties to Championship side Middlesbrough at Old Trafford.
The English Premier League club had dominated the match all through but lost the chance of playing further in the competition after playing 1-1 after 90 minutes, leading to the penalty shoot out.
Ralf Rangnick‘s side could have possibly led on but a penalty miss in the first half by Cristiano Ronaldo held the Red Devils down.
Jadon Sancho had put United ahead after scoring a goal in the 25th minutes of the game.
Middlesbrough’s Matt Crooks, however, rescued his side with an equalizer in the 64th minute of the game.
The match eventually ended in a draw, leading to penalties.
Elanga was the only player who failed to convert from 12-yards during the shootout, thereby helping the visiting team to qualify to the next stage of the competition.
The Red Devils had last won a trophy in 2017.
