LEO MESSI WINS SECOND MAJOR TROPHY WITH ARGENTINA AS ITALY FALLS
Lionel Messi has won his second trophy with the Argentine National Team. The Albiceleste beat the Azzuri’s of Italy 3-0 to win the Finalissima on Wednesday night. He also won the best player of the match.
Argentina and Italy played the finalissima at Wembley Stadium in England with 87,000 full capacity. This involved the champions of Europe and the champions of South America. The Azzuris of Italy won the 2022 European Nations Cup whereas Argentina won the Copa America.
This would be Messi’s second major trophy with the Argentina Senior National Team after leading his them to win the 2022 Copa America. They pipped Brazil by a lone goal at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janerio.
Lautaro Martinez and Angel Di Maria scored the first two goals after which substitute Palo Dybala added the third. Lionel Messi provided two assists as he displayed a master class performance.
Messi dragged two defenders along before tearing away to lay a square pass to unmarked Martinez who planted in the first goal after 28 minutes of action. Angel Di Maria scored a similar goal to the one he scored against Brazil to win Argentina the Copa America. He scooped the ball pass his club mate Donnaruma who was in post for Italy.
The 34 year old captain then assisted Dybala for the third goal to seal the win for the Conmebol Champions. This was Messi’s 161st match in Argentina colours. He has so far scored a record 81 goals.
Leo had already lost four major finals with Argentina. The 2014 FIFA World Cup Final been most significant. He also lost the finals of the 2007, 2015 and 2016 Copa America. He is expected to bow out of the National Team permanently after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
