Kotoko maintain lead as Sharks continue to struggle

The first round of the 2021-2022 Ghana Premier League ended with some interesting results. Kumasi Asante Kotoko maintained their lead on the league log with Elmina Sharks finding themselves placed at the bottom of the league.

Kumasi Asante continued their winning ways after beating Accra Lions 3-1at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.  Frank Mbella opened the scoring with the first two minutes of play. He would go on to score another goal from the penalty spot. Accra Lion pulled one back through another penalty just before the first half ended. Mbella put the game beyond the Accra based team when he scored the third goal in the dying moments of the game. Kotoko survived some scary moments from Lions in the seconded half of the game after the latter lifted their game and pushed for the equalizer.

Former Black Stars midfielder Sulley Ali Muntari got his start of a game for Accra Hearts of Oak on Sundau when Real Tamale United drew with Accra Hearts of Oak at the Tamale Sports Stadium. The Phobian coach made six changes to his starting line-up. RTU’s Yaw Osei in post for the Tamale lads made it extra difficult for the Phobians to get a goal. Hearts of Oak ended the last ten minutes of the game with ten men after Caleb Amankwah was given a second yellow card for a bookable offence. It must be noted that Muntari came from the bench in his debut game when the Phobians lost to City rivals Olympics.

Accra Great Olympics ensured their fans went home with much joy when they made matters worse for Elmina Sharks. Daniel Adjetey scored a last minute goal to secure all three points for the Olympics. Sharks are unfournately placed at the bottom of the league table and would need to improve their performance at the second round.

At the Dormaa Agyemang Badu Park, Aduana Stars had a good day after beating Eleven Wonders 3-0.  The Ogya Boys were really on fire as Bright Adjei scored a hat-trick. All three goals were scored in the first half within a time of four minutes.This has put Adjei to the second spot on the top scorer chart of the Ghana Premier League. He lags behind Kotoko’s Mbella who has eleven goals to his credit.

The fight of the miners also ended 2-2 at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium. Ashgold failed to grab all three points at stake from Bibiani Gold Stars. Ashgold failed to protect their lead as the Bibiani Miners had to come from behind on two occasions to secure the all important point at Obuasi. Yaw Annor scored the first goal for the Obuasi lads with Frank Akoto scoring the second one. Emmanuel Appau and Prince Owusu Agemang also scored for Bibiani.

In other news, WAFA were pipped by a lone goal at home by Karela United. John Tedeku scored an own -goal after failing to clear the ball from his goal line.

Heavy downpour forced the game between Medeama and Dreams FC to be postponed as the Tarkwah Na Booso Park was heavily soaked up.
