Ghana FA decision to camp home-based for South Africa clash could prove a masterstroke

Black StarsThe Ghana Football Association’s decision to camp home-based players in preparation for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers could prove masterstroke should the foreign-based players not turn up. According to sources, coach Charles Akonnor has submitted his squad to the GFA who have contacted the invite players but their clubs are reluctant to release them.The clubs are not obliged to release players for this international break due to the ongoing implications of the coronavirus pandemic, Fifa said in February.With less than a week to the qualifiers, the GFA has not been successful in convincing the clubs.But should the players not come down for the games, Akonnor will have to go with a Black Stars team with more than 90 per cent of home-based players. Only Mubarak Wakaso and Emmanuel Boateng are based abroad.The home-based players were invited last month, and have been in camp for more than three weeks. This has provided them with a good chance to play together and know each other well ahead of the games.The Black Stars need a point in their final two games against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe to secure qualification to the biennial tournament in Cameroon.
