FG Hails Israel Adesanya For Successful Title Defence

The Muhammadu Buhari Government has applauded Nigerian Mixed Martial Artist, Israel Adesanya for retaining his Unified Fighting Championship (UFC) title.

Adesanya, the UFC middleweight champion successfully defended his title by beating American fighter, Jared Cannonier at the T-mobile Arena in Las Vegas, USA in the early hours of Sunday.

Adesanya held off the challenger to pull off the well-deserved unanimous decision victory (49–46, 49–46, 50–45) to retain his title after five rounds.

The Nigerian fighter has now improved to 12-0 in the middleweight division which is the second-longest streak in UFC behind Anderson Silva (13-0).

Reacting to the win, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended Adesanya for retaining his title and extending his winning streak to 12-0.

In a statement on Sunday by the spokesman of the Commission (NIDCOM), Gabriel Odu, Dabiri-Erewa congratulated the champion for the giant strides by defeating his opponent Jared Cannonier in the competitive bout.

The NIDCOM boss hailed Adesanya’s performance and applaud him for showing the true Nigerian spirit which made him not give up his title.

She urged him to sustain the momentum and win more laurels for Nigeria in Mixed Martial Art.

Also, the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, has commended Adesanya for another successful title defence.

In a statement on Sunday, the minister praised Adesanya for being a worthy youth ambassador for the country and for proudly carrying the Nigeria flag everywhere he goes.

The minister said Nigerians were proud of Adesanya and another Nigerian UFC champion, Kamaru Usman, adding that the federal government will continue to celebrate them because they always identify with Nigeria.

“We are proud of Adesanya and Usman and we will continue to celebrate them because they always identify with Nigeria, they always proudly carry our flag everywhere they go. They are our global icons. We believe they have many more successes ahead of them,” he said.
