DWAYNE ‘THE ROCK’ JOHNSON admits he is “excited” about a potential WWE sale.

The Rock became one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time while working for Vince McMahon‘s promotion during the Attitude Era in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

But it seems like the wrestling giants are set to take a new direction with reports suggesting McMahon is ready to sell the company after a turbulent few months.

The 77-year-old initially retired as chairman, CEO and head of creative in July but remained majority shareholder.

The American businessman stepped down after accusations of sexual misconduct and reports he allegedly paid several women millions in hush money between 2006 and 2022.

But McMahon was unanimously voted back in from the board of directors and returned as executive chairman with reports suggesting he will overlook the sale of the company.

There have been rumours suggesting WWE could be sold to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which also owns Premier League giants Newcastle.

But there is currently no deal and speculation suggests there are other potential buyers, such as Comcast, Fox, Disney, Warner Bros, Discovery, Netflix, Amazon, UFC owner Endeavor Group Holdings and Formula One owner Liberty Media.

Hollywood superstar Johnson, who has been linked with a sensational WWE return at the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 39, remained largely coy about the latest developments.

But the 10-time world champion admitted he is thrilled and wished WWE as well as McMahon “all the best”.

The Rock told CNBC: “Well, I can tell you this, I can tell you that it’s an exciting brand. It’s a brand that I’ve been very fortunate enough to have tremendous success [in] over the decades.

“And also, for your viewers here in the business world who may not know, the lineage goes way back, multi-generational with the WWE.

“My grandfather [‘High Chief’ Peter Maivia] wrestled for Vince McMahon Sr in the 70s. My dad [Rocky Johnson] wrestled for Vince McMahon in the 80s.

“And then I came along with my bad haircut and fanny pack and I continued to wrestle for Vince too as well.

“So we’ve seen tremendous success over the years. I think it’s a very attractive company. And I’m excited and I wish Vince and that company all the best.”

A potential WWE sale would change the course of the company forever as it may no longer have a McMahon in charge.

The executive chairman’s return led to his daughter Stephanie McMahon resigning as chairwoman and co-CEO, with Nick Khan remaining as sole CEO and her husband Triple H continuing as head of creative.

The Rock predicted McMahon will only sell to someone who shares the same passion about the company and suggested it could be a candidate that will allow him to continue running WWE.

Johnson added: “I would [agree] and that’s a great note. I think with the world of professional wrestling and the world of WWE, it’s so unique. The fanbase is very large and very passionate and there’s nothing like the WWE.

“So I think with the new owners, if there are new owners, and acquirers who are gonna come in, I think that they have to share that same passion that Vince has for the company and for the world of pro wrestling, which isn’t always easy to do.

“As you guys know, with a company like this, it’s been so incredibly successful over the years, a sale and acquisition could be very complicated, but there’s that unique added anchor to this I believe that Vince feels where you gotta find the right buyer who still has that passion and the love for this very unique world.”
