And one fan spotting the women’s group charging past them was eager to get involved.

They were caught on camera riding along the pavement as a flurry of professionals suddenly appeared on the road.

The amateur cyclist, wearing black clothing and seen with a backpack on their shoulders, tries to increase their pace to keep up with the pros charging past.

But within seconds things go wrong as the rider begins to lose their balance.

The bike falls to their left and the cyclist crashes against the ground.

Concerned pros can be seen briefly looking at the incident as they sped past.

Another amateur cyclist stopped next to the crashed rider and checked that they were OK.

Worried cycling fans took to Twitter after seeing the video.

One said: “The guy was just demonstrating you better wear a helmet when cycling. But he got up pretty quickly.”

While another fan observed: “Looks like gear slipped when he stood up on pedals.”

The women’s race was eventually won by Britain’s Pfeiffer Georgi, two years after she broke her back in the same race.
