Constitution Hill – are we going to see the greatest horse EVER at Cheltenham Festival?

0

STOP everything you are doing at 3.30pm on Tuesday and get to a TV.

Because you simply have to see this for yourselves.

Whether you’re totally new to racing or an ardent punter, chances are you know of Constitution Hill.

An unbeaten superstar under rules, he has won his first five races by a combined 77 lengths.

He has pocketed former City banker money-man and owner Michael Buckley more than £250,000 in the process.

A 1-3 chance – but a whopping 40-1 with Sky Bet – to win the big race on day one, victory there over six other rivals will net him a further £253,215.

A hefty purchase at £120,000 in May 2021, he has more than repaid his fee.

Now history beckons.

Of course, picking the greatest horse ever is totally subjective.

Most people would say Frankel on the Flat. Some would say Arkle. Others Desert Orchid.

Our friends over the pond would point to Secretariat… or even Flightline.

One way to judge horses is to use ratings.

The best over hurdles is Night Nurse, who was rated 182 and a dual winner of the race Constitution Hill will look to make his own.

Constitution Hill is currently rated 177p by racing boffins Timeform.

That little p next to the figures is very important – it means there is more improvement expected.

It’s hard to imagine he could get much better than when he demolished everyone in last year’s Supreme, beating stablemate Jonbon by 22 lengths.

And true, he hasn’t matched that winning distance since.

But then again he has hardly been tested, beating former Champion Hurdle winner Epatante by 12 lengths last November then 17 lengths last December.

Everything has been a warm-up for this.

Described by legendary jockey Barry Geraghty as a big friendly beast, he let his young children play on Constitution Hill when he was still just a promising sort.

But then something flicked in his head and he turned into a machine on the racetrack.

The banker of the week, the must-see horse of the week – the thoroughbred of a lifetime?

We’ll find out on Tuesday.
