Templegate’s Champion Chase runner-by-runner guide

CAPTAIN GUINNESS 1

FLAT Guinness. Has solid Grade 2 form around this trip including when winning at Navan earlier this season but he’s always come up short in this class. Likely to struggle again.

EDITEUR DU GITE 3

SWEET Gite. Stunned Edwardstone and Energumene when winning the Clarence House here in January. As usual, he went from the front and jumped really well.

There was lots left in the tank to get up the hill. The big two will keep a closer eye on him here but he has a chance of pulling off the same tactics.

EDWARDSTONE 5

STONE a rock. Impressive Arkle winner last year and kicked off this season with a superb Tingle Creek win before unseating in Kempton’s Desert Orchid Chase at Christmas.

Tom Cannon had him too far back when he was second in the Clarence House last time and shouldn’t make the same mistake again.

ENERGUMENE 4

MENE machine. Blistering win in this 12 months ago when the testing ground was ideal and he followed up in style at Punchestown.
Kicked off this season with a smooth Cork success before a poor effort in the Clarence House with mistakes over the final two fences.

He’s better than that and is a big threat, especially if it rains further.

FUNAMBULE SIVOLA 2

SIV has holes. Second in this last year and ran his best race since when going from the front to win a Newbury Grade 2 last time.
Deserves his place but will have a battle for the lead with Editeur Du Gite and faster ground would suit.

GREANETEEN 2

GREAN groan. Has landed three Grade 1s at Sandown over this trip but was put in his place by Edwardstone in the Tingle Creek before a laboured effort at Newbury last time.

He jumped poorly there and even his best form looks short of this standard.

NUBE NEGRA 2

NUB needs rub. Peaked two years ago when beating the great Altior at Kempton before going down in a right battle for this race with Put The Kettle On.

He has dropped in class since then to win a couple of Shloer Chases over course and distance but he’s come up short at this level. Could nick third if turning back the clock.

Templegate’s tip

I’M a real Ed case.

EDWARDSTONE was fantastic when winning the Arkle last season and can add the Champion Chase.

Guest posting agency=

He has progressed nicely this season and was a brilliant Tingle Creek winner at Sandown before a clumsy unseat at Kempton.

He ran well in the Clarence House here last time despite jockey Tom Cannon giving him too much to do in the closing stages.

To be beaten a neck was a good effort and he won’t make the same mistake again.

Defending champ Energumene was well beaten in that race but will be a much bigger threat here, especially if it’s soft.

Editeur Du Gite will go from the front and can hold on for third.
