The former Southampton and Chelsea trainee is regarded as a surprise weapon for our great rivals at this World Cup as Germany usher in a raft of talented youngsters.

And Bayern Munich’s £70 million-rated forward revealed just how his football education has stuck with him.

Musiala said: “England have enormous qualities as far as individual players are concerned. All the England players go for one-on-one duels so that is something we can learn about the courage not to avoid any dribbles.

“I hope they do well of course because for a while it was part of my life. I always wanted to play for England when I was younger. When I played in England I supported them with all my heart.

“In the England youth teams you learn different things than you do playing in Germany. I took home many messages. It was a different environment in the England youth set up.

“They set great store by individual technique and one on one play. To play with freedom was the motto at the time. That is what inspired me and will stay with me for all of my footballing life.”

England boss Gareth Southgate wants to copy Germany’s ability to consistently challenge at the top end of tournaments.

Southgate pointed to their record of reaching finals and third place play offs as much as their four World Cup triumphs.

Musiala was born in Stuttgart but moved to England aged seven, going to school in Croydon.

He said: “We slowly but surely get to our strength as the tournament goes on. England have enormous qualities as far as individual players are concerned.

“I didn’t go for the face paint when I was small but playing for the England youth teams I did of course support the Three Lions.”

Musiala’s burgeoning talent has seen him compared to Argentina’s legendary forward and captain Loinel Messi.

But the modest youngster said: “This comparison is an absolute honour because Messi has been playing at the top of his game for his whole life. So comparing me to Messi is not on.

“Really I really think I should focus on myself, there is a lot of room for improvement. I consider myself an individual and want to be a better player every day.”
