Tottenham – who appointed Ange Postecoglou as their new manager this week – are understood to be interested in offering Maguire an escape route.

And Arsenal fans have mocked their bitter rival’s interest in signing the world’s most expensive defender – who has been out of sorts for the last few seasons.

One tweeted: “Dier & Maguire at the back. Pls lord make it happen.”

Another said: “Destruction button.”

And another said: “I used to pray for this.”

One remarked: “Dier & Dire. Has a great ring to it.”

Another sarcastically chimed in: “Definitely going to concede less goals the whole season.

“Like 5 in 38 matches and keep the most clean sheet in the Premier League record as a defensive pair.”

Maguire’s series of blunders last season led to him playing second fiddle to Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and even left-back Luke Shaw at the heart of United’s defence.

And Ten Hag recently hinted that he’s willing to let the England international leave the Theatre of Dreams this summer.

The Dutchman told The Times: “Let’s say I’m happy he’s here and when we needed him he did his job.

“But it’s also a decision he has to make.

“No one would be happy with this situation – he is not as well. He trains always on the best levels, so with 100% effort.

“So he handles that situation well and he’s in that manner and in his captaincy he’s important for the squad.”
